The Warren County Board has approved to undertake the full administration of Warren County Public Transportation, effective March 1st of 2024. Buildings and Grounds Committee Chair Sean Cavanaugh explains the Illinois Department of Transportation has wanted counties across the state to have control of public transportation due to policy changes that occur:
“IDOT in the past has wanted more counties to resume control of their public transportation and less of the outside operators, not that there was anything bad about that, but I think it was easier for IDOT, especially with so many requirements that IDOT puts upon the operator that have grown significantly over the last several years. By adding it to the county, for the county to be fully in charge, it offers a lot of good options to make sure that transportation is very strong in the future and that they can be on top of changes, the needs of the community, expanding services, and getting clean vehicles, if you will.”
In the next couple of years, Warren County Public Transportation is on the docket to receive an electric bus and also have the busses replaced due to the age of the current fleet. Additionally, the Warren County Board has approved the purchase of an inmate transport van for the Warren County Sheriff’s Department, which was funded by the use of COVID monies.
